2-Acetyl-5-iodothiophene is a chemical compound that has been used to study photochemical reactions. It can be used to cleave molecules by irradiation with light, or photocleavage. This type of reaction is known as photochemical hydrosilylation and was discovered in the 1970s. The first use of this compound was for the synthesis of polyhydroxylated compounds by photocleavage of terminal alkynes. Kinetic studies have shown that photolysis rates are dependent on solvent polarity. Photophysical properties show that it absorbs UV light maximally at wavelengths between 265 and 270 nm, with an extinction coefficient of approximately 1.8 x 10 cm cm M at 275 nm. The nature of the product formed from 2-acetyl-5-iodothiophene is determined by the substituents present on the acetyl group, as well as its position relative to the thiophene ring. Cross-coupling reactions are a powerful
