The reaction between 4-chlorobenzofurazan and nucleophilic agents such as hydroxide ion or piperazine leads to the formation of a fluorescent product. This product is a result of nucleophilic attack on the carbonyl group in 4-chlorobenzofurazan. The presence of chloride ions can cause ionization of the molecule, which will lead to a decrease in fluorescence intensity.
