Celiprolol is a drug that belongs to the group of beta-blockers. It acts by reducing the action of norepinephrine (noradrenaline) on the heart and blood vessels. Celiprolol reduces the contractility of the heart and also decreases peripheral vascular resistance, which lowers blood pressure. Celiprolol is available as a tablet for oral administration in two strengths: 2.5 mg and 5 mg. The drug is metabolized in the liver with about 50% of it being excreted unchanged in urine. This drug has been shown to be effective in treating bowel disease, but may not be suitable for people with congestive heart failure or severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Celiprolol may interact with other drugs such as dpp-iv inhibitors, which can lead to serious side effects such as cardiac arrhythmias.
