2-Chloro-6-hydroxypyridine is an organic compound with a molecular formula of C5H3ClN3O. It is the simplest aromatic heterocycle that contains a hydroxyl group. 2-Chloro-6-hydroxypyridine is a colorless crystalline solid and it has been extensively used as a model system for the study of nucleophilic substitution reactions. This compound can be prepared by reacting sodium salts with hydrochloric acid and then heating the solution to evaporate water. The X-ray crystal structure of this molecule reveals that it has three tautomers, which are interconvertible by oxidation or reduction. Chemical biology studies have shown that 2-Chloro-6-hydroxypyridine can be activated by copper to form reactive oxygen species such as peroxides, superoxide, and hydrogen peroxide in biological systems.
