4-Chloromethylpyridine HCl is a synthetic compound that has been shown to be an efficient catalyst for the reduction of trifluoroacetic acid to acetic acid. It is used in a number of organic syntheses, including the conversion of chloroform to dichloroethane and the synthesis of acetaminophen. The reaction solution contains hydrogen chloride and metal ions such as aluminum or magnesium. 4-Chloromethylpyridine HCl reacts with these metal ions to form complexes, which are then reduced by hydrogen gas.
