Croconic acid is a hydrogen-bonded acid with the molecular formula HOCCH. It contains a metal ion, which is bound to two hydroxyl groups, and an intramolecular hydrogen bond. The molecule has a coordination geometry of p2 and the protonation state is pH. Croconic acid reacts with metal hydroxides to form metal complexes with the general formula M(croconate). These complexes are ferroelectric and have a neutral ph. X-ray diffraction data show that croconic acid has a molecular symmetry of D4h or C4v, depending on which crystal form it takes.
