1-Cyanonaphthalene is a small molecule that has been shown to have high affinity for glucocorticoid receptors. It is used as a fluorescent probe to study the effects of glucocorticoids on this receptor, which is involved in the regulation of cellular processes such as inflammation, stress response, and metabolism. The chemical structure of 1-cyanonaphthalene consists of naphthalene and two methoxy groups. 1-Cyanonaphthalene binds to the glucocorticoid receptor by forming hydrogen bonds with its hydroxyl group and trifluoroacetic acid. When it binds to the receptor, it changes the shape of the binding site, which can be detected using fluorescence measurements. This change in shape reduces the affinity of other molecules for this binding site. 1-Cyanonaphthalene also reacts with hydrogen chloride (HCl) and forms a new compound called 2-carboxybenzaldehyde.
