(trans-dl-)1,2-Cyclopentanedicarboxylic acid is a cyclic compound that can be synthesized by the oxidation of the corresponding diol. It is used as a ligand for metal ions in coordination chemistry. (trans-dl-)1,2-Cyclopentanedicarboxylic acid has been shown to act as an intermediate in the biosynthesis of Dysidea and macrocyclic peptides. The synthesis of this compound involves a multistep process, which begins with the formation of a linker that reacts with two molecules of propargyl alcohol to form an olefin. This olefin then reacts with another molecule of propargyl alcohol to form a cyclopentane ring. The final step involves the dehydration of the hydroxyl group at C2 to form (trans-dl-)1,2-Cyclopentanedicarboxylic acid.
