4-Chlorophenyl isothiocyanate (4CPI) is a thione with a chemical structure that contains nitrogen atoms. It has been shown to have significant antifungal activity against Candida albicans and Saccharomyces cerevisiae in vitro. 4CPI binds copper ions at the coordination geometry of a dihedral angle of less than 180° to yield copper complexes, which are responsible for its antifungal activity. The FT-IR spectra of 4CPI show peaks at 1474 cm−1 and 1622 cm−1, which correspond to the stretching frequencies of the N≡N bonds in the molecule. 4CPI also has cancer-preventing properties due to its ability to inhibit the growth of cancer cells in animals.
