1-(2-Chloro-4-fluorophenyl)ethanone is a benzyl compound that acts as an antiviral. It inhibits the production of HIV by binding to the enzyme reverse transcriptase and preventing the synthesis of viral DNA. 1-(2-Chloro-4-fluorophenyl)ethanone also has immunosuppressive properties, which may be due to its ability to inhibit T lymphocyte proliferation and activity. This drug binds to DNA in a manner similar to 2,4,6-trichlorophenol and 2,4,5-trichlorophenol. The binding of 1-(2-chloro-4-fluorophenyl)ethanone to the enzyme RNA polymerase II has been shown in vitro.
