2-(Chloromethyl)-1-methyl-1H-imidazole hydrochloride is an anion that belongs to the class of chiral drugs. It is a fluorescent, chiral, and acidic compound. 2-(Chloromethyl)-1-methyl-1H-imidazole hydrochloride is synthesized by reacting chloroacetic acid with 2-aminoethanol in the presence of sodium methoxide. This reaction produces the corresponding imidazolium chloride salt, which can be isolated as a white solid. 2-(Chloromethyl)-1-methyl-1H-imidazole hydrochloride has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus when used at low concentrations.
