Carprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that belongs to the class of carprofen. It is used to relieve pain, swelling, and stiffness in dogs and cats. Carprofen has been shown to inhibit the production of inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) or leukotriene B4 (LTB4). This drug also has an ion-pairing effect with the chloride ion, which may account for its high bioavailability. Carprofen does not have any meaningful adverse effects on humans at therapeutic doses. Monitoring of environmental levels of this drug can be done using chromatographic or luminescent methods.
