- 2-(1-chloroethyl)-
- hydrochloride
2-(1-Chloroethyl)-1H-benzimidazole hydrochloride is a synthetic chemical that is used as a precursor for the production of 2-mercaptobenzimidazole. It can be prepared by refluxing methanol with phosphorus pentachloride, followed by addition of sodium hydroxide and then chloroethane. The reaction is carried out in an organic solvent such as benzene or toluene. This intermediate can be reacted with triethylamine and alkylating agent to give 2-(1-chloroethyl)-1H-benzimidazole, which can then be condensed with 1,2-diaminobenzene to produce 2-mercaptobenzimidazole.
