5-(Chloromethyl)-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde is an aldehyde that has been synthesized with molybdenum as a catalyst. It absorbs in the ultraviolet region and emits fluorescence. This compound has been used as a fluorescent probe for the detection of hydrogen bonding in biological systems, including mitochondrial membrane potential, lipid bilayers, and fatty acid binding. 5-(Chloromethyl)-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde is also an intermediate for the synthesis of covalent linkages.
