5-Chloro-2-methoxybenzonitrile (5CMB) is an olefinic compound that has been shown to have anticancer and cytostatic effects. 5CMB has been found to be active against glioblastoma cells in vitro, exhibiting growth inhibitory activity and inducing apoptosis. The in vivo efficacy of 5CMB is still under investigation. The mechanism of action for this compound is not fully understood, but it is believed that it may work by inhibiting the production of DNA, RNA, or protein synthesis. It also exhibits a conformation that inhibits the enzyme glutamine synthetase, which contributes to its cytostatic effects. 5CMB has been shown to be a stereoisomeric mixture of two enantiomers: R-(+)-5CMB and S-(-)5CMB.
