2-Chloroisophthalonitrile is a chemical compound with two asymmetric carbon atoms. The molecule can exist as an enantiomer or as a mixture of two tautomers, depending on the conditions. 2-Chloroisophthalonitrile is used in the production of benzimidazole compounds, which are used in the treatment of fungal infections and some cancers. It also has an inhibitory effect on the growth of plants by blocking cell division and inhibiting protein synthesis. 2-Chloroisophthalonitrile is a colorless liquid that boils at 114 °C (237 °F) and melts at -77 °C (-108 °F). It has a pKa value of 9.6 and a pH range from 1 to 10, but is more soluble in acidic solutions than in neutral or basic solutions because it exists primarily as its hydrochloride salt in these environments.
