5-Chloropentanenitrile is a chemical compound that is used in wastewater treatment. 5-Chloropentanenitrile reacts with hydrochloric acid to produce an acylation product, which is then converted to a phosphodiesterase inhibitor by the action of monodansylcadaverine. The presence of cyanides in this reaction converts the phosphodiesterase inhibitor to a more potent form. These reactions are shown in kinetic data and isolated yield of the reactants and products. The product of this reaction is stable under acidic conditions and can be used as a chlorine atom scavenger in the presence of chloride ions, such as those found in water. This product also reacts with phosphorus pentachloride to produce deuterium isotope, which can be used to study kinetic data and isolated yield of the reactants and products.
