• Description: Crotonic acid is a metabolite of crotonaldehyde, which is found in cigarette smoke. Crotonic acid has been shown to have agonist binding site activity and inhibitory properties on the enzyme that synthesizes gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), an important neurotransmitter. It also has inhibitory effects on other enzymes such as fatty acid synthase, which makes it an antimicrobial agent. Crotonic acid also inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to hydroxyl groups on their cell walls, which are important for maintaining their structure. Crotonic acid has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties in mice and rats.
