4-Cyanothiophene-2-carboxylic acid is a heterocyclic compound that is used as an anti-tuberculosis drug. It has a chemical structure that consists of a 4-cyanothiophene ring and 2 carboxyl groups. This compound was shown to have potent activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis in animal models, including mice, guinea pigs, and rabbits. 4-Cyanothiophene-2-carboxylic acid binds to the surface of bacteria and interferes with the synthesis of mycolic acids, which are important components of the cell membrane. It also inhibits the synthesis of DNA and RNA by binding to enzymes found in Mycobacterium tuberculosis. 4-Cyanothiophene-2-carboxylic acid is insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents such as alcohols or ethers.END>
