2-(Chloromethyl)-6-methylpyridine is a nonheme iron complex. It has been shown to bind to the metal ion in the active site of pyridine nitrogenase, a key enzyme in the formation of porphyrin. The binding may be due to a combination of coordination and oxidation, as well as ligand-metal charge transfer. The crystal structure of 2-(chloromethyl)-6-methylpyridine was determined using x-ray crystallography. The molecule has an octahedral geometry and consists of two planar pyramidal groups with pyridine nitrogen atoms on opposite sides and methyl groups on the other two corners. The molecule can also exist as an n-oxide or tetranuclear species, where oxygen or phosphorus oxychloride are bound to each corner respectively.
