It has been shown to be an eluting agent that causes a decrease in the concentration of choline, chloride, and aliphatic hydrocarbon. Cholesteryl methylether was found to be a potent antiviral agent when it was used at high concentrations on cells infected with virus. The mechanism of action involves nucleophilic attack by the hydroxyl group on the phosphate ester bond of viral RNA. Cholesteryl methylether may also function as a vitamin D3 precursor for animals because it is an animal-specific compound and has been observed to cause liver cells to synthesize vitamin D3.
