1-Chloropyrene is a molecule that belongs to the class of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. It has been detected in human urine samples and it is used as a model system for testing the reactivity of other molecules with mitochondrial membrane depolarization. 1-Chloropyrene is hydrophobic and an electron donor, which can be found in fatty acids or pyrene. The reaction mechanism of 1-chloropyrene is shown as follows: The chlorination reaction is initiated by the addition of hydrogen chloride (HCl) to produce HCl + CHCl → CHCl + HCl. The first step in the reaction mechanism is the formation of chloroform (CHCl) from chlorine (Cl) and hydrogen chloride (HCl).
