2-(1-Cyano-1-methylethyl)azocarboxamide is a nonpolar solvent that has been shown to be effective in the treatment of cancer. Its mechanism of action is as a photosensitizer, which is activated by light and catalyzes the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). It forms ROS when exposed to light in the presence of oxygen. 2-(1-Cyano-1-methylethyl)azocarboxamide has also been used to create microcapsules for use in sonodynamic therapy. The agent's ability to form ROS at lower temperatures may make it useful for treating tumors located deep within the body.
