(2S)-1-chloropropan-2-ol is a chemical compound with the formula CHClO. It has been used as a precursor to other compounds, such as oxetane and hydrogen chloride. The molecule consists of a chlorine atom bonded to two hydroxyl groups, which are themselves bonded to an alkene group. The molecule has acidic properties due to the presence of a carboxylic acid group in its structure. It can be prepared by using the experimental method of chlorinating and then reacting with ethylene oxide. Chlorine gas reacts with hypochlorite ion and water to form (2S)-1-chloropropan-2-ol, which is then purified by distillation.
