3-Chlorobenzothiophene-2-carboxamide is a white crystalline compound. It is soluble in water, methanol and ethanol. The molecule adopts a planar structure with hydrogen bonding between the pyridine nitrogen and the amide oxygen. 3-Chlorobenzothiophene-2-carboxamide has been shown to inhibit protein synthesis by binding to anilines, which are nucleophilic compounds that can cause alkylation of amino acids. This inhibitor can also react with chlorine or chlorides in the body to form toxic products such as carbon disulphide.
3-Chlorobenzothiophene-2-carboxamide has been used for the treatment of tuberculosis as it inhibits bacterial growth by binding to DNA dependent RNA polymerase, thereby preventing transcription and replication.
