It is an inhibitor of mammalian DNA polymerase and RNA polymerase, which are required for the production of DNA and RNA. 4-Chlorobutylphosphonic acid inhibits the synthesis of DNA and RNA by binding to the enzyme at a site on the enzyme where it would normally bind to a nucleotide. This inhibition prevents DNA replication and transcription, leading to cell death.
