Description

2-(4-Chlorophenyl)-3-methylbutyryl chloride is an insecticide that is used to control a variety of insects, including flies, mosquitoes, and cockroaches. The chemical is activated by condensation with 3-phenoxybenzaldehyde to form the active compound deltamethrin. The metabolite 2-(4-chlorophenyl)-3-methylbutyric acid has been detected in the urine of humans exposed to this insecticide. This metabolite can be formed by hydrolysis or oxidation of 2-(4-chlorophenyl)-3-methylbutyryl chloride as well as by enzymatic conversion of deltamethrin in vivo. Testing for residues of 2-(4-chlorophenyl)-3-methylbutyryl chloride should include testing for metabolites such as 2-(4-chlorophenyl)-3-methylbutyric acid.
