Description

Chlorpheniramine is a first-generation antihistamine that blocks the action of histamine, which is released in response to allergens. Chlorpheniramine has been shown to be effective against allergic symptoms, and is used for the treatment of seasonal allergies and chronic urticaria. It also has an anti-inflammatory effect, which may be due to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis. Chlorpheniramine maleate is a salt form of chlorpheniramine that dissolves in water more readily than the free base form. The optimum concentration for chlorpheniramine maleate in humans is 1 mg/mL. The solubility data for this drug shows that it can be dissolved in polymeric matrices such as polyvinyl alcohol or polyacrylamide gels with the addition of sodium chloride or sodium sulfate.
