Citraconic acid is a dicarboxylic acid that belongs to the group of organic acids. Citraconic acid has been shown to inhibit the enzyme activities of methylene-tetrahydrofolate reductase and methionine synthase in an animal model, which may be important in autoimmune diseases. This compound also has redox potentials that are similar to those of glutathione, a potent antioxidant. Citraconic acid is soluble in water, but not in organic solvents such as ether or chloroform. It reacts with magnesium salts to form magnesium citrate, which can then react with water vapor to form citric acid. The reaction mechanism for this transformation includes a covalent link between citraconic acid and magnesium hydroxide that is oxidized by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) into tiglic acid.
