Description

The neonicotinoids are a class of pesticides that have been widely used in the last 20 years. They are typically applied as seed treatments to protect crops from insect pests, but they have also been applied to soil and as foliar sprays. The neonicotinoids are systemic compounds that can be detected in plant tissues and pollen and nectar, as well as in water, air, and soil samples. Many studies have shown that neonicotinoids can affect the central nervous system and cause adverse effects on human health. One study found that chronic exposure to neonicotinoid chemicals may result in insulin resistance in humans by activating nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) on pancreatic islet cells. This study investigated the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and serum levels of neonicotinoids using a sample of healthy adults who were not occupationally exposed to these substances.
