Cobalt(II) thiocyanate is a metastable compound that can be obtained in the form of an air-stable, light-sensitive powder. It is used as a reagent for the preparation of protein samples for analysis by electrophoresis, usually after separation from other substances. Cobalt(II) thiocyanate reacts with basic proteins, such as albumin to form a stable blue complex. The optimum concentration of this compound is 0.1% (w/v).
