The chemical structure of ceramide 6 contains an unsubstituted carbonyl group at C3, which is responsible for its hydroxyl group at C2. This group may be responsible for the dry weight increase and lipid peroxidation seen in this molecule. Ceramide 6 also contains ester linkages with dipropyl ether and malonic acid at C5, which may account for its acid analysis results.
