Description

a-Caryophyllene is a sesquiterpene that is found in many natural sources, such as eugenol, sesquiterpene lactone, and phytol. It has inhibitory properties against the growth of bacteria and fungi. a-Caryophyllene has been shown to have strong antioxidant properties. In vitro assays have shown that it can inhibit the production of nitric oxide by inhibiting the enzyme nitric oxide synthase (NOS). This compound also has an effect on cell culture. It has been shown to reduce cell proliferation in cultured human cancer cells and nepetal cataria cells. This compound also shows anti-inflammatory properties through its inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis.
