Cetyltrimethylammonium chloride is a quaternary ammonium compound that is used as a disinfectant and preservative. It is effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including antibiotic-resistant strains. Cetyltrimethylammonium chloride has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by disrupting the bacterial membrane potential, leading to leakage of intracellular components. This compound also inhibits mitochondrial function in bacteria and has been shown to be effective against benzalkonium chloride-resistant bacteria. Cetyltrimethylammonium chloride can be used for wastewater treatment and is commonly used in laboratory settings as a structural analysis reagent.
