S-(Carboxymethyl)-L-cysteine (CMC) is a thiol containing compound that is used as a dietary supplement. It has been shown to have beneficial effects on chronic cough and asthma symptoms in two-way crossover studies with human subjects. CMC has also been shown to reduce the production of proinflammatory mediators by inhibiting toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) activation, which is important for the development of respiratory problems. CMC has also been shown to inhibit mitochondrial functions in cells and produce side effects such as light sensitivity and stomach upset when taken at high doses.
