Carbuterol hydrochloride is a bronchodilator that belongs to the class of beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonists. It is used as an inhalation aerosol for the treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Carbuterol hydrochloride enhances cardiac contractility by stimulating beta-2 receptors, which causes an increase in both heart rate and blood pressure. This drug also has been shown to enhance the flow of fatty acids from tissues into the bloodstream, which leads to weight loss. Carbuterol hydrochloride can be found either as a free base or as a fatty acid ester salt. The free base form of carbuterol hydrochloride irritates the lungs, while its ester form does not have this effect.
