Cefcapene is a prodrug of cefpodoxime that is used in the treatment of bacterial infections. It is an oral antibiotic that has good tissue penetration and can be administered to children. Cefcapene is converted to cefpodoxime by hydrolysis in the stomach and small intestine, which results in increased bioavailability and decreased side effects. The conversion of cefcapene to cefpodoxime can be monitored by reaction solution tests or by measuring the calcium binding activity of the drug. Cefcapene is not active against Mycobacterium tuberculosis or other acid-fast bacteria.
