• Description: Ceftriaxone is a cephalosporin antibiotic that inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to their cell walls. The main mechanism of action is the inhibition of bacterial cell wall synthesis, which prevents the formation of new cell walls and leads to cell death. Ceftriaxone can also be used as an experimental model for neurotoxicity in humans. Ceftriaxone has been shown to cause neuronal death in rats with induced brain injuries. This drug also has been shown to have an anti-inflammatory effect on bowel disease in mice and humans. Ceftriaxone binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) in the bacterial cell wall, preventing the formation of an enzyme-antibiotic complex with the enzyme β-lactamase, which is required for bacterial cell wall biosynthesis and protein synthesis. This binding prevents bacterial growth and division by inhibiting protein synthesis and transcription.
