5-Chloro-1-(4-piperidinyl)-2-benzimidazolidinone (5CBZ) is a potent inhibitor of 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of cortisone to cortisol. 5CBZ inhibits the production of cortisol, which in turn causes inhibition of the synthesis of protein and lipids and may also have anti-inflammatory effects. This drug has been shown to be effective against human amide hydrolase, although it does not inhibit other enzymes such as cytochrome P450 or acetylcholinesterase.
