Clopyralid is a herbicide that inhibits energy metabolism in plants and is toxic to animals. It binds to the active site of the enzyme succinate dehydrogenase, preventing the conversion of succinate to fumarate. Clopyralid also has a synergistic effect with picolinic acid, which is found in plants and can be used as an analytical method for clopyralid. Clopyralid toxicity studies have been carried out using a model system that simulates wastewater treatment and plant physiology. This chemical was found to be non-toxic to plants at concentrations up to 10 ppm, but it was toxic to algae at concentrations of 1 ppm and higher. Its toxicity profile varies depending on the type of organism being tested.
