Cotinine N-oxide is a metabolite of cotinine, an alkaloid that is the primary metabolite of nicotine. Cotinine N-oxide has been shown to have genotoxic potential and is classified as a class B2 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. It has also been shown to be toxic to cells in culture. Toxicology studies have found that this metabolite can inhibit certain enzymes and interfere with cellular processes, such as protein synthesis. This compound has been detected in human urine samples and was detected by hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) in clinical pharmacology studies. HILIC is a type of chromatography that separates polar compounds from non-polar compounds. The sample preparation process must be done appropriately to avoid matrix effects during analysis.
