Coumarin is a natural phenolic compound that has been used as a pharmaceutical and food additive. It is found in vanilla, tonka beans, clove oil, and many other plants. The drug transporter protein P-glycoprotein (Pgp) transports coumarin out of the body by binding to it on the inside of the cell membrane. Coumarin has shown antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria and yeast. It also inhibits growth of cancer cells by inhibiting cellular respiration and inducing apoptosis. This compound binds to structural analysis probes such as fluorescence probe, which can detect its presence in cells with high sensitivity. Coumarin is important for biological studies because it can be used to prevent unwanted reactions from taking place in a reaction solution by acting as an inhibitor molecule.
