6-Cyano-2-methylpyridine is a triazine derivative that undergoes a tautomeric change in the reaction solution from 6-cyano-2-methylpyridine to 2,6-dimethylpyridine. It reacts with chloride ions to form a coordination compound with a square planar geometry. The reaction rate of this compound is increased by the presence of chlorobenzene, which acts as an electron donor. The fluorescence properties of this compound are dependent on the electronic state and it can be used for bioassays.
