Description

5-Chloro-2-pyrimidinol is a sulfoxide that is used to treat gout and rheumatic arthritis. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of cells in the liver and other tissues by inhibiting the activity of dehydrogenase, an enzyme involved in the synthesis of fatty acids. The cytotoxic effect of 5-chloro-2-pyrimidinol on horse liver cells was dose dependent and increased with increasing concentrations. It has also been shown to be effective against some colchicine resistant strains of metaphase, including those from human cancers. Crystallographic data shows that 5-chloro-2-pyrimidinol binds competitively with colchicine and nocodazole at sulfoxide sites on metaphase chromosomes. It has a high fluorescence emission spectrum when dissolved in water, making it suitable for use as a fluorescent marker for hydrophobic substances such as lipids.
