4-Chloro-3-hydroxybutyronitrile (CHB) is a subunit that is used in the synthesis of some antihypertensive drugs and antipsychotic drugs. It is synthesized from hydrochloric acid, chlorine, and an amide or fatty acid. The asymmetric synthesis of CHB can be achieved by using the reaction solution, which is a mixture of hydrogen chloride and hydrochloric acid. The stereoselective synthesis of CHB involves the use of serine protease as a catalyst. This process results in high resistance to serine proteases.
