3-Chloro-4-methylbenzenesulfonyl chloride (3CMB) is an inexpensive, easily available reagent that can be used for the synthesis of epoxides. The most common use for 3CMB is as a catalyst in the optimization of epoxide syntheses. This compound has been found to be effective in vitro and in vivo. 3CMB has also been shown to reduce plasma exposure to epoxides and has been tested as a preservative for carbon tetrachloride, tetrachloroethane, and other organic solvents. 3CMB is soluble in water and is not volatile at room temperature. It has a high yield in the presence of sulfur, which makes it very useful for chemists who are interested in optimizing epoxide syntheses.
