7-Chloro-3H-quinazolin-4-one is a synthetic nucleophile that has a strong affinity for DNA. It binds to the phosphate groups of DNA and inhibits the growth of bacteria by preventing the formation of new cells. This drug also has been shown to inhibit epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) in vitro and in vivo, as well as tyrosine kinase, which is an enzyme that produces epidermal growth factor. 7-Chloro-3H-quinazolin-4-one has been shown to inhibit cancer cell proliferation in vitro and in vivo, with some success in clinical trials. 7CQ was also found to have antibacterial activity against Gram negative bacteria.
