Collagenase is an enzyme that cleaves the extracellular matrix of a variety of tissues, such as skin, cartilage, and bone. It is used in the treatment of certain diseases that result from abnormal tissue growth. Collagenase has been shown to inhibit tumor growth by degrading collagen within the tumor cells. The optimum concentration of collagenase for treating tumors is 20-100 micrograms/ml. Collagenase also inhibits the production of proinflammatory cytokines, such as IL-1β and TNF-α, which are associated with chronic inflammation. Collagenase induces cell death through apoptosis and necrosis. Collagenases are also capable of binding to DNA and RNA. END>
