Description

Ceftizoxime is a cephalosporin antibiotic that is used to treat infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria. Ceftizoxime binds to the penicillin-binding proteins in the bacterial cell wall by competitive inhibition. This binding prevents the formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. It also has a neurokinin-1 receptor antagonist effect, which may be related to its efficacy against infections of the central nervous system. Ceftizoxime has been shown to have a high affinity for extravascular sites and it has good oral bioavailability. The half-life of ceftizoxime is 2 to 3 hours in adults and 1 hour in children due to rapid elimination from body tissues. The drug can be given intravenously or orally as a prodrug.
