Pitavastatin calcium is a member of the statin class of lipid-lowering drugs. It is an inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase, which is responsible for the conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonic acid. Pitavastatin calcium has been shown to inhibit cholesterol synthesis and reduce serum LDL levels in humans. The molecular formula for pitavastatin calcium is C32H40O8Ca, with a molecular weight of 576.13 g/mol and an empirical formula of C32H40O8Ca. This drug has a triclinic crystal structure and crystallizes in the form of needles that are x-ray amorphous. The synthesis involves reacting 2-cyclopropyl-4-(4-fluorophenyl)-quinolyl chloride with calcium hydroxide in dry tetrahydrofuran at 0°C to give the title compound after purification by column chromatography on silica gel
